1 INTRODUCTION The diaphragm muscle (DIAm) is unique to mammals, and as a pump, it provides the major contribution to the generation of transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi) for ventilatory (breathing) and non-ventilatory behaviors, including cough, sneeze, and straining maneuvers (Fogarty & Sieck, 2019; Sieck & Fournier, 1989).
