Credit: Courtesy of Stay Healdsburg & Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce From barbecue in the Carolinas to mezze in Vermont and wine country fine dining in California, great meals aren’t confined to America’s major metros. As part of Food & Wine’s 2025 Global Tastemakers awards, this list spotlights standout small U.S. cities for food and drink – each with fewer than 100,000 residents. Columbus-style pizza at TAT Ristorante Di Famiglia. Photo: Courtesy of Wendy Pramik I’ve lived in Columbus for more than 35 years, ordering square-cut pies with sweet sauce and edge-to-edge toppings without giving it much thought. Around here, that’s just pizza. I didn’t realize we had a style — let alone a distinct one — until others started naming it. Turns out, I wasn’t alone. Most of the folks I interviewed didn’t know they were making Columbus-style pizza until someone told them.

Anna Maria Island. Photo: Courtesy of Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau As our plane lifts off from Florida, I glance out the window for a final look at Anna Maria Island. From above, it strikes me as oddly familiar – not from a map, but from an Instagram reel my daughter once showed me. The island resembles a single-celled organism under a microscope – self-sustaining, each part intricately connected, every piece relying on the other.
