Anyone who’s lived in a sharehouse knows it only takes one person to send the household off the rails. Everyone’s life is affected when one housemate leaves out food, plays loud music all night or routinely uses all the hot water. Sharing a home with someone means you’re intimately impacted by their best and worst behaviour.
But what about when your housemate’s actions cause everyone to owe money, or even put everyone at risk of eviction?

Description This research investigates the key links between housing and poverty. Its purpose is to draw together different dimensions of the relationships between housing costs and poverty, including policy settings, tax and transfer systems, housing assistance and place-based dimensions and individual capabilities. The causal relationships between housing and poverty are complicated. Housing costs commonly comprise the largest share of living costs and can increase the risk of poverty.

Description This report focuses on the intersection of two concurrent trends that are acting to reshape the experience of ageing in Australia. The first of these is the structural ageing of the Australian population itself – the growth in the proportion of people aged 55 years and over living in Australia, in real terms.

The collision between an ageing population and a housing crisis has left more older people in Australia enduring housing insecurity and homelessness. Our research, released today, explores how the scale of these problems among older people has grown over the past decade. Our report, Ageing in a Housing Crisis, shows safe, secure and affordable housing is increasingly beyond the reach of older people. This growing housing insecurity is system-wide.

Description This project examines whether current social housing allocation and matching policies and practices meet the needs of applicants or tenants and maximise social housing sector performance and efficiency outcomes. It looks at how to optimise housing stock allocations based on individual needs (including the role of support) and neighbourhood and community needs (avoiding concentrations of disadvantage and potential antisocial behaviour).
