Amid the visual overwhelm on display in Laura Owens’s eponymous exhibition, which spans two of Matthew Marks Gallery’s Manhattan spaces, an abiding image is the candy cigarette. Within the reception desk – itself an artwork, Untitled, 2025 – at 522 West 22nd Street, the artist has stashed several hand-painted faux cigarette cartons.

I REMEMBER MY FIRST STUDIO VISIT with Lin May Saeed like it was yesterday. I’m always a little nervous when I make a studio visit. After all, it is a vulnerable exchange to share works-in-progress in a private space with someone you don’t know yet. At first, she was as shy as I was, which established a bond between the two of us right from the start.

Knots of language—funny, intimate, sordid, psychoanalytic—fill Kaari Upson’s drawings. This exhibition, “Body as Landscape,” features thirteen works on paper from the Los Angeles artist’s too-brief artistic career (she died in 2021, at age fifty-one). Operating as mind maps, script-like brainstorms, sculptural plans, and stand-alone objects, they chart Upson’s obsessions.
