Some guitarists treat the instrument with deference: each note they coax out is seamless, glossy and well-rounded like their pristine Stratocaster or SE Custom. Others are more combative: they wrench noises from their beaten and battered machines like it owes them money. Think Bill Orcutt or Viv Albertine. Nina Garcia – once known under her alias Mariachi – falls into that category. The French musician’s playing occupies the outer musical territories.

Brighton rock band Ditz turn out a knotty blend of hardcore, industrial and post-punk, and their two-pronged guitar attack owes a lot to how Jack Looker and Anton Mocock were introduced to the guitar. “I got Guitar Hero for Christmas one year,” Mocock says. “Obviously I was like, ‘This is so easy!’ Then I started learning guitar and it was not easy.”Looker recalls: “I used to get those shitty guitars from Argos when I was like 3 or 4 – the little plastic ones with the really bad strings on.

There’s a charming lack of cynicism to the Manic Street Preachers’ new album, Critical Thinking. Despite concerning themselves explicitly with hyper-capitalism, managed decline, and political unrest, James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire, and Shaun Moore can’t help but turn out something that sounds, well, optimistic. But this is the charged, gimlet-eyed optimism of the soapbox speaker: things are bad but they can get better, so you’d better listen in.

The songs on Decide Which Way The Eyes Are Looking, Lina Tullgren’s new album, seem to come together in real-time. Tullgren’s elliptical melodies and understated delivery are pitched somewhere between early draft and final product, like they have been caught in the first flush of inspiration. Horns and brass are strewn throughout, often fitting themselves almost tentatively around the sleepy, tumbling songs. At the end of ‘Poem’, you hear a voice – Tullgren’s? – saying “yeah, that was great”.
