We are on the brink of the release of another “normal” year of GCSE results. Ofqual has asked the exam boards to go easy on candidates in computer science, French and German in order to offset new specifications or to correct historic harshness in grading. Beyond this, no concessions have been made for this cohort, despite the fact that they missed out on schooling and socialisation in Years 8 and 9. Fair enough, you might think: this is all part of a national keenness to move on from pandemic.

It’s never good karma to celebrate an individual losing their job. While I have publically taken great issue with Claudine Gay’s actions as the President of Harvard University, I still do not celebrate her resignation. At the same time, Dr. Gay’s resignation is a positive for the Harvard community—and for higher education at large. Harvard needs a leader whose rhetoric and actions manifest an unflinching commitment to student safety and whose academic integrity is beyond reproach.
