St Mary’s Rugby Union couldn’t get revenge for last year’s Varsity result with a 14-33 defeat to Brunel on the main campus pitch at West London Varsity. After a tight three-point loss last year at Brunel, St Mary’s scored two tries in an intense early encounter on Varsity day. Brunel opened the scoring early following a mistake from the Simmies. An overthrown lineout close to the St Mary’s line allowed Brunel to pounce and dive over for the early lead.

Rugby Union is on a knife-edge as the game continues to battle its checkered past with head injuries and concussion stories. According to data from the Professional Rugby Injury Surveillance Project (PRISP), in the 2022-23 season, concussion continued, for the 12th consecutive season, to be the most common match injury sustained in the English Premiership, accounting for 24% of all match injuries with 128 cases reported.
