Holy Thursday! This week: two old dudes with parallel careers in the same genre, both born in 1955 on either side of the border by a Great Lake; one just turned 70, the other will later this year. (Thirty Tigers)Gary Louris has led the Jayhawks for the past 40 years (or rather, he joined the band in 1985, which Mark Olson started the year before; Olson left in 1995). So… why a solo album? His two other solo records featured full-band arrangements.

I’m currently teaching acourse at NYU on the artistry of Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson, so I’ve been thinking quite a bit about how words can be combined with music — sung words, but also spoken words, and those that split the difference. Michael Hurley: old, weird America at its finest. Just last month I was speaking about Michael Hurley — among the most delightfully eccentric, wise and naughty voices in modern American folk music — who passed this week at the age of 83. Thanks! - WillI’m working on a longer review-essay of last night’s People Have the Power: A Celebration of Patti Smith, an all-star tribute show at Carnegie Hall. For now, here’s some scattered thoughts on a handful of the performances, a data dump from my notes w/ phone footage + photos, and a reflection.

RIP David Johansen. I once interviewed him for the NYTimes; very funny, smart, spiritual (“a Catholic Taoist,” he said w/a phlegmy chuckle). A carved-in-stone New Yorker. Shameful the Dolls never made it into the Rock Hall of Fame. More thoughts below. https://t.co/iC1i9xPpFl
