    One of the most important parliamentarians of his generation was born on this date in 1835. Richard Cartwright, who would go on to serve in the cabinets of Alexander Mackenzie and Sir Wilfrid Laurier, started his life in his native Kingston as a firm supporter of his friend John A. Macdonald. This all changed when the first PM left Cartwright out of cabinet. Cartwright then became a Liberal and developed an almost irrational hated of Macdonald that lasted until the end of his days.

    Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge says it would be within the spirit of the government’s digital news law if CBC/Radio-Canada were to receive money from Google — but suggested its share of the $100-million fund may be capped. In an interview on Rosemary Barton Live airing Sunday, St-Onge said the deal was “mainly and mostly about written press” but that broadcasters like CBC/Radio-Canada also had digital written news and could be included.

    Defence Minister Bill Blair says he is committed to pushing for increased investment in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) after two top commanders sounded the alarm recently on operational readiness. “Colleagues and shipmates, the [Royal Canadian Navy] (RCN) faces some very serious challenges right now that could mean we fail to meet our force posture readiness commitments in 2024 and beyond,” Vice-Adm. Angus Topshe, commander of the navy, said in a YouTube video posted earlier this week.
