Newport baseball has been on the upswing in the early season, and thanks to their impressive start to the season, they entered league play ranked as one of the top 10 teams in the state. The Cubs enjoyed a pretty full preseason this year. Prior to commencing league play against Stayton on Apr. 14, Newport had already played 10 games. Over that span, Newport put up an impressive 7-3 record and solidified themselves as one of the best 4A teams in the early part of the season.

There will be a new hand on the helm for the Vikings girls basketball team, and Siuslaw's new head coach comes into the position with plenty of experience. "Siuslaw High School is excited to announce the hiring of Amanda Richards as our new Varsity Girls Head Basketball Coach," Siuslaw Athletic Director Chris Johnson said. Richards is in her second year with Siuslaw Schools and is currently teaching 7th-grade math.

Siuslaw's baseball and softball teams have been at the plate and around the diamond, and though victories have been hard to come by, both teams have captured wins in the early season. BaseballThrough the first eight games of Siuslaw's baseball season, the Vikings were 2-6. The Vikings achieved their first win against Toledo on Mar. 29. The Vikings built a lead through the opening four innings, jumping ahead 7-1. Jacob Mann had an exceptional game on both sides of the plate.

League play is underway for Taft’s softball team, and despite having one of the toughest conferences in 3A, Tigers’ Head Coach Sandy Stuart is feeling optimistic about her team’s prospects this season. After losing league games to Dayton and Willamina to start the campaign, the Tigers rebounded in a resounding fashion, winning their Apr. 4 clash against Jefferson 26-2. The win against Jefferson will hopefully be the spark that ignites the Tigers’ season. The result of Taft’s Apr.
