During the financial crash of 2008, the man who would one day be Treasury secretary taught a class at Yale University on what happens when the markets panic. "I was teaching it in real time," he recalled. "The kids were trying to figure out what was going on, which made it exciting."Scott Bessent did not know it then, but he was in for a lot more excitement. This week he once again found himself standing before his fellow Americans, talking about a great panic in the financial markets.

In the summer of 1951 a struggling writer typed a letter to the one publisher in New York who had always believed in him and encouraged him to stick at it. True, the publisher had just rejected a long and unpunctuated stream-of-consciousness novel that he had bashed out in a few weeks, on a single 120ft-long roll of paper, while up to his eyeballs on coffee and amphetamines. Well, now he had knocked up a poem. It too was sparingly punctuated, and quite baffling.
