CANNONSBURG Raceland’s Linden Sammons is a man of few words. But he doesn’t need words. He lets his actions do the talking, and it doesn’t take any deciphering to get the message of what Sammons is about. “What you see from Linden is what you get,” Raceland coach Mike Salmons said. “He is a tireless worker. He was tremendous in the weight room and over the years as he matured, that carried over onto the field. He ended up playing a lot of offense for us too.

Boyd County has seen its wrestling program grow from the ground up over the past several years with a host of wrestlers who hold their own at State. During that time of growth, the Lions have focused on not only expanding their own program but building up the sport of wrestling as well. So, it’s only fitting that Boyd County be involved in the next step in the evolution of wrestling, the KHSAA girl’s wrestling state tournament.

RACELAND With one Friday left in the 2024 football season, Raceland once again finds itself playing at Kroger Field for the Class A state championship today. The Rams enter the final game of the postseason with a 10-4 record; their only loss in Class A this season came at the hands of Pikeville in a 16-13 affair on Sept. 13. The Rams hope the old adage of “third (straight) time’s the charm,” will ring true in Lexington today.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. While Morgan County made a change at the head coaching position, it’s a familiar face that’s taking the reins. Derrik Young is back as head coach after spending a year with the boys team as an assistant. Young was coach of the Cougars for three years before departing ahead of last season. “I stepped away for a year there and helped the boys a little bit,” Young said. “But I just kind of started missing it.

Morgan County knows what it takes to be successful. Last year, the Cougars finished the regular season on a nine-game winning streak. That hot spell propelled the team to repeat as 62nd District champs. While the team ultimately fell in the first round of the region tournament to Fleming County 75-57, they posted a 23-7 record and went undefeated in district games. “I think last year’s group really set the tone as far as culture goes,” Reece Griffith said.
