The reported operating ratio (OR) decreased by 210 basis points to 65.3% from 67.4%. The core adjusted OR decreased 150 basis points to 62.5% from 64.0%. Reported diluted EPS increased 17% to C$0.97 from C$0.83.

    Union Pacific’s first-quarter 2025 financial results indicate a “solid start” to the year. Though earnings per diluted share and operating income were flat, “reflecting a 7% headwind from fuel and leap year,” revenue carloads and freight revenue excluding fuel surcharge rose. “The team delivered a solid start to the year as we worked closely with our customers to meet their needs in an uncertain environment,” said CEO Jim Vena.

    The U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) declined on April 21 to hear CSX’s bid to revive its antitrust lawsuit accusing Norfolk Southern of illegally restricting access to Norfolk International Terminals (NIT), served by the Norfolk & Portsmouth Belt Line Railroad Company (NPBL), according to Reuters. SCOTUSrejected CSX’s appeal of a lower court’s ruling last year that the railroad “sued too late, missing a four-year window to bring claims for U.S. antitrust law violations,” Reuters reported.
