A local man has been arrested for smuggling cannabis from Bangkok to Macau hidden in three pairs of sneakers, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said during a special press conference yesterday. The 49-year-old suspect, surnamed Pinho, works as a clerk. Chong did not reveal Pinho’s nationality. According to Chong, PJ officers observed Pinho behaving suspiciously after he arrived at the local airport and intercepted him for a routine luggage check at 6:40 p.m. on Saturday.

Two male university students, from Hong Kong and the mainland, have separately been defrauded out of HK$155,000 and HK$580,000 in fake police scams, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said yesterday during a regular press conference. In the first case, the Hong Kong victim received a phone call earlier this month from someone claiming to be a mainland police officer.

The Public Security Police (PSP) announced yesterday that they expect the city to record between 630,000 to 670,000 daily entries and exits at its border checkpoints during the upcoming Chinese New Year (CNY) holiday period, or 3 percent more than last year. The mainland’s 8-day holiday, known as the Spring Festival Golden Week, will take place from next Tuesday, to February 4. The Year of the Snake begins on Wednesday, January 29.

The Judiciary Police (PJ) announced yesterday three more “guess who I am” phone scams, in which a Hong Kong man and a mainland man purporting to be the victims’ “grandsons” separately cheated three local elderly women out of a total of 169,000 patacas, PJ spokesman Chao Teng Hin said in a regular press conference yesterday. The three victims, two females and one male, reported to the police in the past week their separate losses of 15,000 patacas, 100,000 and 54,000 patacas respectively.
