The Barbie film is a $145 million feel-good summer blockbuster that nevertheless pays lip service to a critique of patriarchy and capitalism. One might say it’s an elaborate marketing tool that spoofs both marketing and tools. Ultimately, though, the blatant contradictions—when they’re not played for laughs—seem as smoothed over as the plasticine non-genitalia of the toys.
