    Racial integration came slowly to the University of Mary Washington. Although the epochal Brown decision in May 1954 mandated an end to racial segregation in public schools—and, by inference, in colleges as well—it was not until almost exactly 10 years later that the barrier to the admission of Black students to Mary Washington College (as it was then known) was officially removed when the Board of Visitors formally approved a desegregation policy.

    My friend and colleague David Page, who has died aged 80, was the former editor of BBC Urdu and other Asian language services, a scholar of Pakistan’s history and a committed advocate of aid to Afghanistan. David had been the first editor of the BBC Pashto language service that was set up in 1981 following the Soviet invasion and occupation of Afghanistan.
