Donald Trump has threatened to impose sanctions on Ukraine as well as Russia if the two sides fail to reach a peace agreement. In an Oval Office meeting with Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, Trump likened the war in Ukraine to a fight between two young children in a park. “Sometimes you’re better off letting them fight for a while and then pulling them apart,” Trump said. The president added that he had relayed that analogy to Vladimir Putin in their phone conversation on Wednesday.
