About a week or so ago, I came across a Black photographer who posted something on Threads that not just caught my attention but expressed something I recently felt. He said that — and I’ll be paraphrasing here — that for Black photographers this moment is important. We’re living with an administration that’s trying to erase our history and presence. It’s imperative to document the big moments and the mundane. If we don’t, we risk the future not knowing what happened.

St. Pat’s For All Parade was founded by Brendan Fay, a gay Irish immigrant, in response to the exclusion of LGBQT+ groups like from the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Manhattan. The first St. Pat’s For All took place back in 2000 in the neighborhoods of Sunnyside and Woodside Queens, which traditionally have been home to Irish immigrants.

I was running behind for a meeting I was invited to near Union Square Park. And as I got off the subway, there was a Not My President’s Day March that started at Union Square Park and ended at Washington Square Park. I had to miss much of the march for my meeting but I was able to check out the rally with a large group of protestors on a very cold afternoon. This was one of many rallies and demonstrations across the country. And I suspect that there will be many more as the temperatures warm up.
