CHICAGO (AP) — Vice presidential nominee Tim Walz and former President Bill Clinton are headlining the Democratic National Convention’s third day on Wednesday, as the party hopes to build on the momentum that Kamala Harris has brought since joining the race a month ago. Walz, the Minnesota governor who has become known among supporters as a folksy, Midwestern teacher, football coach and dad, will introduce himself to the rest of the country.

National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day started back in 2022. Within the span of two years, there’s been more hope to help people who’ve lost someone to a fatal overdose from Fentanyl. For the first time since 2018, the city of Duluth might actually see fewer fatal fentanyl overdoses in 2024 compared to 2023’s 37 fatal overdoses. Jess McCarthy-Nickila is the program coordinator for the Duluth Police Department’s Substance Use Response Team.

At 5am on Wednesday, August 20th, MnDOT opened up several connections between I-35 and I-535 with the Twin Ports Interchange project. These connections are causing less traffic for Garfield Ave. and Port Terminals. Although these connections are also impacting local businesses. Several connections along I-35 and I-535 are now open for motorists. Pippi Mayfield, the D1 Public Engagement and Communications Director with MnDOT says the TPI project will open other routes this year.

Duluth Workforce Development is offering a new, no cost, one-semester training course with an Introduction to Human Services. This college course is offered in response to the critical need for trained Human Services staff. These services range from mental health, addiction treatment, but also other human services in the Duluth community. Course participants will earn college credit through Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. This credit can be applied toward a two-year Human Services degree.
