A former state worker and her boyfriend at the time were each sentenced Friday to 20 months in federal prison for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars that was slated to support Californians unemployed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Phyllis Hope Stitt, 61, worked at the Employment Development Department as an employment program representative, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.

A person was killed in a collision Saturday morning that occurred near Del Paso Heights, according to the Sacramento Police Department. Officers responded to a crash near Rio Linda Boulevard and North Avenue just before 11:30 a.m., where one of the parties was pronounced dead, according to Police Department spokesperson Officer Anthony Gamble. Gamble said the other vehicle stayed at the scene and that the driver was cooperating with authorities.

A major construction project on eastbound Interstate 80 in West Sacramento, which transportation officials warned could result in additional travel time this weekend, caused relatively small delays ahead of Saturday afternoon’s game between the Athletics and the New York Yankees. However, drivers reported a few more significant delays coming into the stadium from other directions as road work and congestion mounted by early afternoon.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is seeking additional information about a man and his teenage son who are accused of scamming a 65-year-old man who was privately selling his car this week. The 41-year-old suspect and his 16-year-old son met with a Sacramento County resident at his home on Thursday to purchase his car,the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

A driver was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning in Elk Grove near the intersection of Backer Ranch Road and Elk Grove Boulevard, police said. The Elk Grove Police Department reported the driver collided into a tree just before 5:30 a.m. Officers discovered the single occupant was deceased when they arrived. No other cars were involved in the crash, the Police Department said in social media posts Saturday morning.
