In 2014, Honda debuted an oddly named, somewhat unusual but instantly popular new motorcycle: a half-sized street bike called the Honda Grom 125. What’s a “grom?” It’s slang for a young or newbie action sports participant, which is probably a good description for many Honda Grom owners. Back in the day, we called Honda’s half-pint motorcycles “minibikes,” but those were 50cc buzzers more at home in the dirt than on the street, even though they were street legal.

Last year, I put some miles on a unique $6,500 carbon-fiber push scooter reportedly cooked up off-hours by the design and race team over at Red Bull/Oracle. While the $6,500 urban scoot can't top 20 mph due to legal constraints, it was nonetheless an intriguing design exercise, and it does go 20mph with aplomb - and miles of style for a lowly push scooter.

From the beginning, the electric motorcycle market has been brutal. While most models that I’ve sampled have been fast, technologically advanced, and incredibly fun to ride (trust me on that one), nearly all of the companies that make them have found it almost impossible to turn a profit. Many have sadly closed up shop: Energica, Sonders, Brammo, Fuell, Cake, Alta, Arc, and others are now historical footnotes in motorcycle history.

If you want to know the current status of electric “push scooters” in the U.S. (and everywhere for the most part), look no further than this recent video of a guy riding an electric push scooter on the freeway in Texas - at 65 mph. Was it some custom Frankenscooter cobbled together in the guy’s garage? While it’s not possible to determine exactly what brand the scooter is, it clearly looks like an off-the-shelf OEM offering readily available on the internet.
