The Paris Olympics provided a brilliant showcase for America’s female athletes. Their soccer, basketball, gymnastics, swimming and track and field teams amassed a treasure trove of medals while millions of Americans marveled at their individual skills and athleticism. My wife said several times as we watched various events that she wished she could have competed as a young woman.

I met Carol Martin at the small A&P on Metropolitan Avenue, six years after we graduated from grammar school. We had been classmates at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal for eight years but seldom if ever spoke. She was very quiet, demure, and well-behaved. I was none of those things. But here we were in the store’s produce section in the summer of ’60. Carol gave me a big smile and said, “Hi!” I was dumbstruck. I couldn’t believe how gorgeous she had become in those few years.
