This is my final Editorial written as managing editor. Editorial Director Larry Jewett assumes my duties starting with the 2024-dated issues, adding to the managerial responsibilities he has held for some time as we transitioned to my retirement at the end of 2023. It has been an amazing 47 years, with my dream job. I was in late high school and early college when I began working toward a career in journalism.

The 2023 Limited Edition Silver Proof set goes on sale at the United States Mint website starting Nov. 28. The set, which contains eight coins, is priced at $220. It is limited to an edition of 50,000 sets, with a household order limit of one set. The set features coins identical to those in other 2023 Mint products, in single packaging.

Producing dies for the upcoming 2024–2025 American Liberty medal and coin program bearing the designs of the first U.S. silver, the 1794 Flowing Hair dollar, by using 21st technology is a bad idea. The charm of the nation’s oldest coins, those produced from 1792 to the 1830s, lies in the individualism of each die, the invariable imperfections resulting from the hands-on work of engraving the two main design devices and punching each star, letter and numeral into the die individually.

The United States Mint’s American Liberty gold coin and silver medal series, launched in 2015, has, to date, been all about experimentation — about offering new interpretations of Liberty not bound by historical precedent. Starting in 2024, however, the program will return to Liberty’s historical roots, resurrecting the designs used on the nation’s first silver dollar, released in 1794.
