For the first time, schools will be allowed to pay their athletes directly after a multibillion-dollar legal settlement was approved Friday night, ushering in a new era of college sports. The House settlement, an agreement in three federal antitrust lawsuits against the NCAA and the four power conferences, was approved by Judge Claudia Wilken, letting schools pay players and creating an enforcement entity for the new system.

LSU football scheduled a home-and-home series with SMU on Labor Day weekend in 2028-29, according to a copy of the game contract obtained by The Advocate. The teams will play Sept. 2, 2028, in Baton Rouge, and Sept. 1, 2029, in Dallas. In both cases, the home team will pay the visitors $750,000 for the game. LSU now has one game on the schedule in 2028. In 2029, it has non-conference games set against SMU, Arizona State, Rice and McNeese State.

Last December, during a crucial fundraising push for LSU football’s roster, coach Brian Kelly and general manager Austin Thomas went to the corporate headquarters of MMR Group, a national construction firm based in Baton Rouge. They met with Pepper Rutland, the founder and president. Rutland, a former LSU linebacker and team captain, has donated to LSU for years. He already knew Kelly, but this was the first time the coach visited his office.

LSU football landed a commitment Sunday from Houston transfer safety AJ Haulcy, according to his representatives at A&P Sports Agency, reinforcing its secondary ahead of the 2025 season. Haulcy, a senior, was a first-team All-Big 12 selection last year after posting 74 tackles, five interceptions and 13 passes defended. He chose LSU over Miami after entering the transfer portal earlier this spring. As he considered his options, Haulcy took a visit to LSU on Sunday.

Update: two bills that would have exempted NIL money from Louisiana state income tax didn't get anywhere during the state's legislative session, which ended yesterday. That will still be taxed.
