I learned something from a friend the other day. We have cheese stages. We were discussing her young kids and she said something about cheese sticks. When I was little, I imagined being a mermaid. I’m not sure every kid growing up in the desert had such lofty goals. Around here, I get it. There’s water all over the place and even pigs love swimming. But where I lived, it was a long way from any hint of mermaids. A new item recently hit grocery shelves and I am afraid I’m going to have to request it be removed immediately. It’s not only incredibly dangerous, but it’s one of those things that someone like me absolutely can not resist. I believe in law this is called an “attractive nuisance,” which is another way of saying if you tempt people unreasonably then you can be held legally responsible when they just follow their nature and go for it.

I’ve got a wooden swan in my front yard right now. It’s nestled between the tiny donkey pinata, the fake flowers and the weird parrot riding a bike we got at my cousin’s wedding in Mexico. That’s the wedding where they had fire dancers — actual fire dancers with whirling batons aflame and no shortage of women wearing significant hairsprayed updos. After that high risk performance, the bike-riding parrot seemed a fitting memento.
