While Americans have long debated religion’s role in politics, the past several decades have witnessed the channeling of religious impulses into temporal political projects. This misdirection stems from a misunderstanding of the distinctive roles that religious and political institutions play in American life. That misunderstanding in turn has deepened public distrust and dysfunction in both religion and politics.
