A former Gambian soldier has been convicted on torture charges by a US court for his involvement in crimes committed while feared strongman Yahya Jammeh was in power in the West African country. Michael Sang Correa was found guilty of being part of a conspiracy to commit torture against suspected opponents while serving under a military unit known as the "Junglers". "The torture inflicted by Michael Sang Correa and his co-conspirators is abhorrent," the Justice Department said.

The Sudanese army says it has recaptured the presidential palace in the capital Khartoum from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after almost two years of fighting. Reclaiming the east African country's seat of power marks a major victory for the army, which has been making significant advances against the RSF in recent months. But it is still a long way from ending the war entirely, with large parts of the country still under the RSF's control.

Benin forces have suffered heavy losses in an attack near the border with insurgency-hit Niger and Burkina Faso, authorities have said. Colonel Faizou Gomina, the national guard's chief of staff, said one of Benin's most well-equipped military positions had been hit in the north on Wednesday evening. "We've been dealt a very hard blow," Col Gomina added. The country has in recent years witnessed increasing attacks in the northern region blamed on jihadist groups based in neighbouring countries.
