Standing in line at the H-E-B checkout, I’m mindlessly deleting emails when a photo of a naked, pornographically hot beefcake stretched out on a massage table illuminates my screen. “King of All Hogs” by J G Lynas begins innocuously enough. Two lovers, happy and carefree, out on the open road. Sex in roadside bathrooms. Sustenance via burgers and instant noodles. Two days with only the vaguest sense of geography. And then they reach Guthrie Farm. Fear is the emotion most directly evoked by horror; its trappings and accouterments are designed to signal to the reader (or viewer, in the case of films) this is scary, feel afraid.
