Autrefois, pour annoncer l’élection du pape, le dernier des cardinaux-diacres ouvrait une petite fenêtre de l’endroit où les cardinaux étaient réunis pour annoncer l’habemus papam. On pouvait alors procéder à la libération des cardinaux jusque-là enfermés. À partir du XIXe siècle, est apparu le rituel de la fumée permettant d’annoncer l’élection : noire, le vote n’a pas été concluant.
