BIRD BODY is a new art exhibit at the Charles Allis Art Museum in Milwaukee that explores what people can learn about themselves by observing the birds around them. Did you know Milwaukee is home to one of the oldest stamp clubs in the country? The Milwaukee Philatelic Society is nearly 130 years old, and its club members meet regularly every month. Collectors say stamps are art and history in miniature form, and it’s a fairly inexpensive hobby to get into. Lake Effect’s Xcaret Nuñez spoke with Rob Henak, historian for the Milwaukee Philatelic Society, and Blayne Kirsch, the president of the Milwaukee Philatelic Society.

Kade Barkas grew up with a fear of storms, but they never knew where it came from. It wasn’t until the UW-Milwaukee junior flipped through their childhood photo album that they realized they had lived through Hurricane Wilma in 2005, when it touched down in southern Florida, where they were visiting. “Hurricane Wilma was the lowest pressure Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, which was crazy to experience as a 2-year-old,” Barkas says.

A new documentary screening at the Milwaukee Film Festival explores the city's historic Brady Street neighborhood from its earliest roots, its eras of immigration, to the present day. Brady Street: Portrait of a Neighborhoodwas made over the course of two years by more than 80 UW-Milwaukee film students and directed by Sean Kafer, the program director of Documentary Media at UWM. Kafer spoke with Lake Effect’s Xcaret Nuñez about the making of the film.
