Nitrogen pollution caused by global urbanization and industrialization is an important factor in the eutrophication of natural water bodies and lakes [1], [2]. Activated sludge obtained via the biological nitrification–denitrification process has been widely applied for nitrogen removal in traditional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) [3].
