Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) belongs to the herpesvirus family of β-double-stranded linear DNA viruses. The virions are approximately 200–300 nm in diameter and encode approximately 250 open reading frames. HCMV is the most common and most harmful pathogen causing congenital and perinatal infection in newborns. The incidence of congenital HCMV infections in newborns is approximately 0.2–6.1% [1].
