Introduction Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the infectious agent responsible for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) (1). In some patients, COVID-19 results in acute respiratory distress syndrome and multi-organ failure due in part to the proinflammatory cytokines produced during the immune response, referred as the “cytokine storm”. At cellular level, cytokine-driven leakage of the pulmonary endothelium contributes to COVID-19 pathogeny (2).
