In late 2022, dermatologist Avrom Caplan, MD, started treating a patient who had made multiple emergency department visits for a scaly rash. At Bellevue Hospital, the patient had been diagnosed with ringworm, also known as tinea or dermatophytosis, that had not responded to 3 rounds of topical steroids and antifungals. Caplan, an assistant professor at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York City, saw immediately that the case was unusual.
