Spending seven years or more in a Chinese jail just for practicing one’s faith and (perhaps) sharing it is not “normal.” Considering also how prisoners of conscience are mistreated in Chinese prisons, these verdicts are just unacceptable. Yet, they are now so frequent that the world scarcely pays attention. Trials are also conducted in a cavalier way.

by Yang FengOn August 7, 2024, human rights organizations were informed by co-religionists and relatives of Xu Shanping, a 61-year-old Falun Gong practitioner from Beihai City in Guangxi Province, that she had passed away on July 7. This was just two days after being released early from the Nanning City Women’s Prison due to a severe illness she developed there. Xu was still serving her sentence for participating in Falun Gong activities when her family was asked to collect her by the authorities.

by Yang Feng On June 5, co-religionists told “Bitter Winter” that in late May Nu Xiaona, a female Falun Gong prisoner of conscience, had been transferred from Harbin no. 2 Detention Center to Heilongjiang Provincial Women’s Prison, a notorious place of death and torture nicknamed “the cemetery of Falun Gong ladies.”Nu Xiaona, who will turn 50 next year, is a severely disabled person. She was diagnosed with progressive rheumatoid arthritis during her sophomore year and had to drop out of college.

Two women should now be added to the list. Li Yuzhen, 74, from Daowai District, Harbin City, was tortured to death in the Heilongjiang Provincial Women’s Prison. Li was a veteran of Chinese jails.
