Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons have suspended supplies from a Cranswick-owned Lincolnshire pig farm, after undercover footage allegedly showed serious animal welfare breaches. The footage, captured by campaign group Animal Justice Project (AJP) and reported by the Mail on Sunday, appears to show distressing scenes from Northmoor Farm, a facility supplying Cranswick, one of the UK’s largest pork producers.

Sainsbury’s has launched a trial allowing shoppers to pay directly on hand-held SmartShop devices, skipping the need to go to the checkout. The supermarket chain is testing the technology in two stores, in Richmond and Kempton, in a bid to streamline the shopping experience for customers, reported the Grocer. It is understood that the handsets will allow customers to tap to pay, printing or emailing a receipt before they return the device to its designated bay.

Co-op has diverted stock to stores in rural areas, as it struggles to address supply shortages following the ongoing fallout from its recent cyber attack. The convenience giant has prioritised supplying essential products to remote countryside locations, reported The Telegraph. The news follows reports that some of the more remote locations in Co-op’s over 2500-store network were forced to pause important operations, leaving the business struggling to manage deliveries from its suppliers.

The government is investing £16m into cybersecurity following the recent high-profile cyber attacks on UK retailers M&S, Co-op and Harrods. Speaking today (7 May) at CyberUK conference in Manchester, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Pat McFadden described the cyber breaches as a “wake-up call”. “Cyber attacks are not a game. Not a clever exercise. They are serious organised crime. The purpose is to damage and extort,” said McFadden, reported the Telegraph.
