Mantle plumes can encounter stagnant slabs in the mantle transition zone (MTZ) during their ascent from the lower mantle to Earth’s surface. However, the interactions between stagnant slabs and mantle plumes remain poorly understood. This study presents new data on the spatial thermal−lithological−chemical heterogeneity in the mantle over a vast area of Southeast Asia that reflects the variable influence of a late Cenozoic mantle plume.
