1 INTRODUCTION Sirtuins belong to a conserved family of histone/protein deacetylases that require the cofactor nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) to deacetylate lysine residues in proteins (Giralt & Villarroya, 2012; McDonnell et al., 2015; Park et al., 2011). Sirtuins mediate histone protein posttranslational modification by coupling lysine deacetylation to NAD+ hydrolysis.
