1 Introduction More than 70% of the ice-free land surface has undergone human land use activities to meet the needs for food, fuel, fiber and shelter (Erb et al., 2017; Luyssaert et al., 2014). Land cover has been modified mainly through deforestation for agriculture, husbandry and urban use (Arneth et al., 2019; Luyssaert et al., 2014; Winkler et al., 2021).
