In 2012, biochemists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle found that children’s cells, shed in utero, can go on living in the brains of their mothers for several decades. The study’s authors couldn’t definitively say why, or explain what such cells do, exactly, but the news reminded me of my childhood paranoia that my mum was secretly able to read my mind. (Were microchimeric cells… psychic transmitters?) As pre-adolescent neuroses go, I suppose this one came from a good place.

When an indie musician makes it into the tabloids, it’s almost always for the wrong reasons. For me, it felt particularly weird in the case of the American indie-rock star Elliott Smith.
