Around 67 hours before filming began on Beast Games, his now-blockbusting reality competition series for Amazon Prime Video, the YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, sank down deep into an ergonomic chair in an office somewhere near the soundstage and hauled his legs on to a set of metal drawers. He looked beat. “I gotta figure out what we’re doing,” he said to Samir Chaudry, a fellow streamer who was documenting the making of the show.

In April 1951, General Douglas MacArthur went to the US Congress to deliver some good news. Japan, he said, had “undergone the greatest reformation recorded in modern history”. From the “ashes left in war’s wake” had risen a nation “dedicated to the primacy of individual liberty and personal dignity”, with “a truly representative government committed to the advance of political morality, freedom of economic enterprise and social justice”. Before cinema became an art form, it was a technological marvel. One Saturday in April 1894, crowds gathered at 1155 Broadway in Manhattan for a chance to peer into a Kinetoscope – a precursor to movie projectors that created the illusion of movement by rapidly running still images in front of a bright light. New Yorkers put their eyes against a peephole and saw footage of cockfights, blacksmiths at work… Scenes of everyday life made new again by the magic of motion pictures.
