As President Donald Trump visits the Middle East on his first major foreign trip of his second term, there is one country he isn’t scheduled to visit that might come as a surprise: Israel. With planned presidential stops in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and possibly Turkey, it seems that Israel, one of the few places in the world where Trump is seen favorably, is not on the schedule. The reason?

Well, the election is finally here, and the scenario that has been painfully obvious for some time may be about to take place: In a tight election, the Biden-Harris administration’s disastrous policy of supporting Israel’s genocide for over a year, a policy that is significantly unpopular among Americans in general and Democrats in particular, might cost them the votes needed to hang onto the White House. The anniversary pieces are here. There will be many of them, one year after October 7, 2023, written in magazines and journals, turned into videos and segments and performed as ceremonies as well. To fixate on this date, however, is to fundamentally misunderstand its genesis and its meaning; and, perhaps most importantly, is to inevitably welcome more horrific versions of it in the future. The temptation to reflect in this moment is tremendous.
