On the way to meet Xenya Genovese, who performs under the esoteric moniker of Freak Slug (itself nothing more than a joke about feeling like a freak and liking slugs), I was packed with endless others on a Central line carriage that was so hot it made my insides radiate. So when I finally made it to Bethnal Green, and found the non-descript street corner we agreed to meet at, her Mancunian charm and casual demeanour made for a welcome and literal breath of fresh air.

Producer Dan Snaith goes by many names, but it’s been a few years since we’ve heard from his more pop-leaning project, Caribou. Snaith wears many masks, but on Honey it’s clear that these different parts of himself have a distinct effect on the others. Having focused more energy on the more dance-oriented Daphni project, his latest offering serves up a potent mix of atmospheric but melodic dance tunes, as well as incorporating more vocals with surprisingly well-crafted songwriting.

A sunny September afternoon painted the backdrop of Dalston’s curve garden while I searched for Elliot and Virgile Arndt; the Franco-American sibling duo known as Faux Real. Since starting this collaborative project in 2018, the pair have been prolific on the live circuit; their shows feeling like a campy adrenaline shot to the heart, complete with heavy choreography, costumes, and both brothers full of personality.
