ALMOST three-quarters (72.4%) of Malaysia’s health and welfare sector comprise female graduates, making it the most women-dominated field in the country (see infographic). Women, according to the World Economic Forum (WEF) Global Gender Gap 2024 Insight Report, also make up the majority of graduates in natural sciences, mathematics and statistics, education as well as arts and humanities.

PETALING JAYA: Female engineers are quite a rare group in Malaysia, making up only 27% of graduates in the field. But while women are the minority in the profession, the situation is improving. Data from the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) shows that there’s a higher portion of women in their ranks today - from 20% of members in 2022, women in IEM now make up 25% as of March this year.

Not only would this reflect the composition of academics where female lecturers made up almost 60% of educators at these institutions, it would also result in different values and perspectives being brought to the table and this can have important bearings on how the university is run, said Sharon A.

PETALING JAYA: Women may make up the bulk of lecturers in public universities, but when it comes to the top leadership, their numbers trail behind men. Last year, female lecturers made up almost 60% (17,981) of the 30,432 lecturers in Malaysia’s 20 public universities. But it’s the opposite at the top – only 36% of those at the university management level or executive committee are women.

PETALING JAYA: When it comes to cashless payments, e-wallets are Malaysians’ favourite way to pay. Electronic money (e-money), which includes e-wallets and mobile banking apps, has recorded the biggest number of transactions, compared with other electronic payment (e-payment) tools. A total of 3.65 billion financial transactions were done through e-money from January to September this year, based on data from Bank Negara Malaysia. This makes it the most popular e-payment method.
