    TOKYO -- NEC and trading house Sumitomo Corp. are teaming up on an agricultural support service that uses artificial intelligence to analyze data to help improve yields while saving resources, aiming to support stable production amid frequent extreme weather events from climate change. Sumitomo is involved in the agricultural materials business, including pesticides and fertilizers, in 40 countries.

    TOKYO -- Shipments of Japanese electronic parts and semiconductors are starting to pick up, but industry players expect only a slow recovery in the first half of 2024 as Chinese consumer spending remains weak. Inventories of electronic parts and devices declined for five straight months through December, data from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry shows. Inventories fell 25% on the year in the October-December quarter after a 20% drop in the previous three months.

    TOKYO -- Toshiba will delist on Dec. 20 after shareholders on Wednesday approved steps for the troubled industrial group to go private and seek a revival under a consortium led by buyout fund Japan Industrial Partners. The acquisition, which will end Toshiba's 74 years as a listed company, sees the departure of activist investors that had clashed with the Japanese blue chip's management over strategy.

    TOKYO/KYOTO, Japan -- As global smartphone sales plateau, many of Japan's biggest electronic parts makers see components for electric vehicles powering profit growth in the new fiscal year. Combined profits at the top eight players are forecast to rise for the first time in two years. They expect consolidated net profit to grow 8% on the year to a total of 829 billion yen ($6 billion) for the fiscal year ending March 2024.
