All too often now we hear of appalling natural disasters. In fact, we are almost immune to how commonplace they have become. People were fleeing from fires in Greece this summer and the heat in some Italian regions reached record levels. Now we hear the news from Hawaii about the fires on the island of Maui and most especially in and around the historic town of Lahaina. Gordon and I are very fond of Maui and the wonderful Hawaiian people.

“The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men,Gang aft agley.”Today I’m sitting in the garden in stunning sunshine thinking how astute Rabbie Burns was. Yes, my plans for a 60th garden party went all to pot. It was raining all day and the tables which were meant to be decorated with white tablecloths, garlands of faux flowers, cake stands and china teacups were left bare and soaked while we all looked out at them from indoors.

I often seem to be slow on the uptake with certain things. For example, I remember discovering eBay for the first time a few years ago and being very excited by a few purchases. However, when I talked to my friends, they found it hilarious that it had taken me so long. To be fair, I was slow in general with any online purchasing.

I’ve got a big birthday this year but I’m not very good at having parties. I think it comes from a long-standing memory of having a summer birthday when everyone was away on holiday and couldn’t come. Or maybe just an insecurity of “why would they want to come?”Is anyone else like that when it comes to parties? Maybe I’m a bit strange that way. I’ve had a couple of big bashes, one memorable one in London and one very glitzy party in LA but usually we don’t bother.

If ever you were going to be thankful to live in Scotland it’s surely when these deadly heatwaves hit Southern Europe. Even though this time it’s going to miss the UK, we are set for temperatures to rise later in the month. Scotland thankfully never seems to suffer in the same way as it does down south and although we may all like a bit of sunny weather, that heatwave we had last year was just too much. Temperatures in Italy this week have reached 48 degrees.

For years and years, I’ve had so much wonderful feedback from YL readers no matter what topic we are discussing. I clearly remember the first time I talked about my husband Gordon’s cancer diagnosis, being quite overwhelmed by your support and stories of many of you going through similar things.

I’m working from home for a couple of weeks and I’m determined to actually see some friends who I’ve been neglecting. Gordon is wonderful at staying in touch with people. On his travels around the globe I’m amazed at how many people he has actually managed to hook up with. I’m also amazed that he can be bothered. If I have been travelling, I’m much more likely to be found tucked up in bed with my book and room service, than be out socialising.

If you read last week’s column you will be aware that I was bravely or stupidly stepping into an arena where I may have been fed to lions but somehow, I survived unscathed. Talking politics is always a bit dangerous whether that be at the dinner table or in the workplace or more especially on TV!But yes, I had that moment of madness where I said yes to appearing on Debate Night on BBC Scotland and I think I was writing last week’s column while heading up to Elgin for the show.

Do you ever get fed up with all the palaver that goes with flying? While a flight still obviously remains the quickest way for me to pop to Scotland I sometimes get scunnert (or is it scunnered?) with having to drive to Heathrow, get there two hours before the flight, do all the queueing at security etc etc. When you do it as much as I do it gets a bit annoying.
