Unite, the GMB and Unison union members are taking part in action across Dumfries and Galloway on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Unison warned that emergency repairs and water quality checks would not be carried out and problems with supply or sewage would have to wait until the strike was over. It said it had rejected a 2.6 per cent pay offer, saying it “fails to compensate staff for a decade of real-term pay cuts”, although Scottish Water said the current offer was higher.

GRETNA’S Lowland League season ended last Saturday with a 2-0 defeat to relegation threatened Gala Fairydean Rovers. Lewis Hall and Liam Hoggan got the goals for the Galashiels outfit in front of a healthy crowd at Raydale. The win for Gala means they should be safe, they lead Broomhill – who still have a game to play – by three points and a superior goal difference.
Scottish Water staff to go on two-day strike over pay

STAFF at Scottish Water are in the midst of a two-day strike in a continuing row over pay, says UNISON. Strike action will take place across Scotland on Tuesday April 22 and Wednesday April 23. The two-day walkout follows a one-day strike at the end of last month. The union says that emergency repairs and water quality checks will not be carried out during the action. Problems reported with the water supply, sewage or drainage won’t be dealt with until the strike is over either, UNISON adds.
Ice hockey championships hailed a success

THE tenth world championship ice hockey tournament to be held at Dumfries Ice Bowl in the past 12 years reached its conclusion earlier this week. The Great Britain women’s team finished third in the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Division One Group B tournament, earning the bronze medal. And it was the Italian national team that cut ‘la bella figura’ on the ice, smartly winning gold, and winning convincingly all five of their matches.

Anvils secure Lowland League future

RAYDALE Park will play host to Lowland League football again next season after results elsewhere confirmed safety in the division for Gretna 2008. However, Black and Whites boss Vinnie Parker could still not hide his disappointment following his side’s 3-0 defeat away to East Stirlingshire on Saturday. THE Annan 1st XV were beaten 48-20 in Oban in their last away match of the league season on Saturday. It was a fairly young Annan squad who left Violetbank at 7.30 am in the morning as the coaches continue to look towards next season. Earlier in the season at Violetbank, Annan had comfortably won this encounter but in recent years up at Oban, the team have struggled.
New season, new pètanque club

A BRAND new pètanque club has formed in Annan. Pètanque is a social game which brings people together. It is often played on holiday but it is a growing sport in the UK and in many countries around the globe. Solway Pètanque Club will play on the terrain opposite the Seaforth tennis courts and would like to encourage those in the community to come along and join. There is no need for you to have any equipment when you are starting off as the club will provide everything needed initially.
