DOWNEY – The impossible dream continues for the St. Pius X-St. Matthias football team. The Warriors scored on explosive plays and put up a stout defensive front to dominate St. Augustine of San Diego, 28-7, and win the CIF Southern California Regional Division 4-A championship on Saturday at St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy.

HUNTINGTON BEACH – With many high school boys soccer teams’ top players tied up with club commitments early in the season, opportunities arise for others to earn their stripes. The Millikan boys soccer team is down at least six starters due to the club MLS Cup and injuries, including the Rams’ No. 10 Juan Vasquez, but so far, that’s yet to slow the Rams down.

LONG BEACH – The rematch was more compelling than the original, but the sequel still came up Monarchs. St. John Bosco put up a gritty defensive front and capitalized on big plays, but Mater Dei came up with the answer time and time again to down the Braves, 31-24, in the CIF-SS Division 1 championship game at Veterans Stadium. No. 1 seed Mater Dei (12-0) captured its 13th CIF-SS football championship and will await its fate in the CIF State Championships.

Tumultuous doesn’t even begin to describe the last calendar year for the Warren football team. Last November, Warren came within a breath of the program’s first CIF-SS football championship, as a potentially game-winning Hail Mary pass was intercepted four yards short of the end zone in the Division 3 final. From that moment to now, the entire Bears program has been flipped over. After helming Warren to its first CIF-SS finals appearance, the Bears head coach Kevin Pearson stepped down in March.
