After October 7th, a musical number from “Les Misérables” rocketed in popularity in Israel. Soloists from the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv recorded “Bring Him Home” in late October as an expression of solidarity with the hostages captured by Hamas. The Chief Cantor of the IDF, Shai Abramson performed it at the March of the Living in Poland in December for Yom HaShoah.

Philip "Fishl" Kutner, who published the Yiddish culture and events newsletter and helped organize Yiddish conferences across North America, died at 97 last Tuesday, Feb. 13. Kutner was born in Harlem, New York in 1926, and spoke Yiddish to his parents Max and Pearl, who were immigrants from the Polish cities of Lodz and Tiktin (Tikocyn), respectively. After his father bought a poultry farm in rural Frenchtown, New Jersey, Kutner graduated high school and became a local agriculture teacher.

In 1911, the Yiddish operetta Shir Hashirim: The Song of Love premiered in New York City, and became immensely popular, performed on stages around the world for decades. The musical comedy, composed by Joseph Rumshinsky and written by Anshel Shor, is about the love triangles of an aging composer along with his adult children and their lovers and friends.

It's 1945, three years before the establishment of the state of Israel and at the very end of the Holocaust. Vilna Ghetto fighter Rozka Korczak-Marla comes to Tel Aviv, addressing the assembled in Yiddish about the extermination of Eastern European Jews. David Ben-Gurion, who would soon become Israel's first Prime Minister, then spoke to the crowd in Hebrew. " A comrade has just now spoken here in a grating, foreign language," he declared.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, who tried to topple the Russian government in June and is reportedly among those who died in a plane crash Wednesday, had a father and stepfather of Jewish ancestry. Prigozhin, 62, did not advertise his Jewish heritage, and Russian nationalists have raised it to him in a country where antisemitism is widespread. The mercenary group he led was named for the antisemitic composer Richard Wagner.
