I guess the Mariners brass listens to Meet at the Mitt because they are executing on my proposal for Operation Surprise Starter. Bryan Woo was supposed to pitch today—the Mariners made a whole big thing about shuffling their rotation so that the fifth starter spot wouldn’t come up in Cincinnati. But then late last night they announced that surprise! it’ll actually be Emerson Hancock pitching today.

Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images Cal Raleigh rode into this game on the heels of hitting home runs in back-to-back games, with the first one of those having broken the franchise record for most home runs by a catcher. Unsatisfied with that “by a catcher” qualifier, Cal decided to open today’s game by making it back-to-back-to-back, pulling a ball over the right-field fence to keep climbing the Mariners leaderboard and give Seattle a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Photo by Bob Levey/Getty Images Would you believe this game will complete the first tenth of the season? The Mariners will try to ride the wave of their best game and their best stretch of baseball into this afternoon’s tilt to see if they can get through 10% of the year at .500. To win today’s game, they’ll turn their hopes on Logan Gilbert outdeuling Nathan Eovaldi, a matchup I find delightful.

Photo by Steph Chambers/Getty Images So you say you’ve got a problem with your infield defense? Can I interest you in an elite defensive third baseman, one that Lookout Landing ranked as the Mariners’ 15th-best prospect heading into the year? The Mariners have called up Ben Williamson and his flashy hot-corner glovework. Williamson, the Mariners’ 2023 second-round pick out of William & Mary, has long been a staff favorite here at Lookout Landing.
