MADISON CO., Ala. (WAFF) - A Toney man convicted of killing his wife is asking for a new trial or for the judge to throw out his conviction altogether. David Tolbert was convicted of Capital Murder in May 2025 for the shooting death of his wife, Savannah Tolbert, in 2022. Following his conviction, Tolbert was sentenced to life in prison. On Monday, his attorneys filed new motions asking the judge to grant Tolbert a new trial or to acquit him. So far, no ruling has been made on either motion.

LAUDERDALE CO., Ala. (WAFF) - A Florence woman who killed a Shoals doctor while driving under the influence of amphetamines is facing new drug charges. According to court documents obtained by WAFF 48 News, Tiffany Balentine was arrested on Friday for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Drug Paraphernalia. She spent a few nights in jail before being released on a $3,500 bond. Balentine pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in 2018 for the death of Dr. Robert Long in 2017.

FORT PAYNE, Ala. (WAFF) - One person is dead following a car crash in Fort Payne. Fort Payne police officers said the wreck happened in front of Walmart on Glenn Boulevard Thursday morning. Officers said traffic is backed up due to the wreck. They are asking drivers to avoid the area for the next hour. Police officials said they would release more information about the crash at a later time.

TONEY, Ala. (WAFF) - A Toney family and their pets are safe after volunteer firefighters put out a carport fire Wednesday night. Firefighters from Toney Volunteer Fire Rescue said they were called to a home on Bonnie Drive around 8:05 p.m. Wednesday. Once on scene, they saw heavy flames coming from a carport attached to the house. Crews said they got the fire under control in about 20 minutes and had it fully out soon after.
